The Council as a body corporate has a legal existence of its own quite separate from that of its members (Section 14(3) of the Local Government Act 1972). Its decisions are the responsibility of the whole body and the council can be taken to court. The Council represents and serves the whole community; it may delegate power to an officer, a committee or work in partnership with other organisations after formally being agreed by the full council.

The Council is responsible for: - The services it provides Establishing policies for action. How money raised from the precept will be spent to benefit the community. Public money is spent lawfully taking into account best value for money. Work in partnership with other organisations. Council meetings being open to the public except in certain circumstances.
